This Shakyamuni Buddha is depicted in 'touching the earth'. It is more commonly known as the 'earth witness' mudra. It is formed with all five fingers of the right hand extended to touch the ground, symbolizing the Buddha's enlightenment under the bodhi tree, when he summoned the earth goddess, Sthavara, to bear witness to his attainment of enlightenment. The left hand is held flat in the lap in the dhyana mudra of meditation, symbolizing the union of method and wisdom, samasara and nirvana, as well as the realization of the conventional and ultimate truths. This substantial Buddha is made of crushed stone and measures 10 1/2" high and 8" wide. The bottom has felt protectors to keep your table tops safe.
