Shoji Screen and Shoji Door FAQ's

Create privacy that lets soft sun-light through with our traditional handcrafted Shoji Screens.  These are beautifully made by expert artisans and imported from Asia. Each Shoji is  crafted from  solid wood with your choice of sturdy fiberglass white ‘rice paper’ backing, rattan or bamboo. They are all double hinged to allow flexibility as a stand- alone room/ space divider. We carefully ship them in reinforced boxes, most with a faux 'crate' fastened with full sized  masonite panels, so that will arrive safely right to your home! Shoji are oversized and are send Fed Ex Ground; Sliding door single sets are sent via Fed EX Third day saver, and multiple sliding door sets will be carefully palletted and shipped by truck.

FREESTANDING ROOM DIVIDERS:

What are our Single Sided Shoji?

These are our most economical, solid wood room dividers with handset woodwork lattice visible on one side, against a sturdy fiberglass, puncture resistant, light permeable shoji 'paper' backing. The wood is usually painted or varnished spruce. These have bifold hinges so that you can arrange your screen  in various positions.

What are our Double Sided Shoji?

These are higher quality, solid wood room dividers with handset woodwork lattice visible on both sides, much sturdier than our single sided screens, against a sturdy fiberglass, puncture resistant, light permeable shoji 'paper' backing. The wood is usually spruce or a higher quality hardwood. These have bifold hinges so that you can arrange your screen  in various positions.

Why such a price difference?

In sum, you always get what you pay for. Our economical single sided shoji are great for those on a budget, or for very informal areas. More formal areas may be better suited with our higher end designs. Please note that some designs have a solid panel bottom kickboard which creates better stability and puncture resistance- great for households with children and pets!

Can I order multiple panels?

In the wide world of shoji, you will find many colors, qualities and panel options. We offer a select assortment of the best imported shoji at a very competitive prices, so if you need multiple panels,  you can easily purchase multiples of our three or four panel patterns, and add or remove panels as you choose. You can find a similar bifold  hinge at your local hardware store, and save on custom panel additions. For example, create a 6 panel natural color shoji by ordering  two- three panels and save!

What about shoji fiberglass paper, and what is Taf Top and Warlon paper?

All of our shoji are made with a soft, sturdy fiberglass, puncture resistant, light permeable shoji 'paper' backing. If shopping for Shoji Screens, you will see that some are made from a special reinforced shoji paper called Warlon®, or Taf Top® as shown below. This is a special type of reinforced shoji paper that is about 5 times sturdier than our standard fiberglass  shoji paper. Warlon  has a reinforced layer to prevent punctures, but yet still permits light through, but is an acrylic material. It is not impervious to breakage however, as no shoji paper is. The Fiberglass Taf Top paper is softer than the acrylic, still puncture resistant and is what is traditionally used in Japan.

What if there is a tear or puncture in my fiberglass or Taf Top Shoji Paper paper?

There is no perfect way to repair a tear or puncture, oftentimes the repair will be more noticeable than the tear. In Japan, it is common to see shoji that have been patched and repaired over years of use. This company http://www.tapplastics.com/shop/product.php?pid=241 sells a sheet of shoji paper at a reasonable price, and there is a glue technique that can be used to patch holes. They should be able to help you. It is not recommended to remove the entire panel, as shoji making is a subtle and elaborate process.
