Guardian Lions are commonly known as Foo Dogs in the west. Sacred to Buddhism, they are viewed as guardians of the Teaching (Dharma) and their Lion's Roar symbolizes the voice of the Teachings of Buddha resounding in all directions.
Foo Dogs Statues are often placed at the gates of the temples and the porches of homes as protectors and symbolize valor and energy. They can also be placed on an altar toward the front, one on each side.
Foo Dog statues are used in pairs with one male and one female with the male lion is represented playing with a ball representing the sun, the egg symbol of the dual aspects of nature, or merely a precious stone. The female lion is generally accompanied by its young.
These guardian lions are crafted of bonded stone which is a mixture of finely crushed stone and poly-resin and completed with a green finish. These indoor/outdoor stone Foo Dogs measure 18" tall, 7" wide and 10 1/2" deep. Each statue weighs approximately 20 pounds and has a felt bottom to prevent scratching a tabletop.
