Each wooden prayer wheel has the mantra "Om Mani Padme Hum" carved on the outside. This mantra calls on Chenrezig, the Buddha of Compassion. Each prayer wheel has paper mantras tightly wrapped inside.
It is believed that spinning the prayer wheel is as effective as reciting a mantra. When turning the prayer wheel clockwise, the prayers are multiplied and radiate outward to the world bringing spiritual merits and divine blessings.
This Tibetan prayer wheel also has the "Calling to Earth to Witness" Buddha also known as the "Earth Touching Buddha". According to tradition, Buddha was on the verge of enlightenment after six years when Mara, the Demon of Illusion, tried to dissuade him. The Buddha meditated all night and called upon the Earth Goddess to witness his enlightenment. While witnessing the Buddha, the Earth Goddess wrung her hair, releasing flood waters that swept away the demon Mara and his temptations. Buddha was then able to share his enlightenment with the world.
This table top prayer wheel is hand carved from Elmwood in Nepal. It measures 17" long, 3" wide and is 11" tall at its highest point. There may be very minor variations and imperfections due to organic nature of the wood and the originality of the artisan.
