Also known as Hotei, the god of good fortune and guardian of children. History traces this Zen monk back to 10th century China who was revered for his generosity and kindness. Also referred to by his Sanskrit name, Maitreya, he represents many important teachings including contentment, generosity, wisdom and open kindheartedness. Folklore has it that rubbing his belly brings wealth, good luck, and prosperity.
The Kirin is one of the “Four Divine Creatures” that are often depicted in ancient Chinese texts. The other three creatures include the phoenix, turtle and dragon. This celestial beast is thought to have lived for 2,000 years, with the ability to spit fire and roar like thunder. The Kirin was known to bring blessings to those who honor and respect their family.
Made from cold cast bronze and hand painted to highlight the fine details. It measures 5 1/2" in height and 6" in width.
